Fundamentals of Elder Mediation:  A Workshop for Experienced Mediators

         Course Content & Objectives


This workshop introduces experienced mediators to the field of elder mediation in its many forms, from facilitating meetings in which families must make difficult decisions, to mediating family disputes concerning a parent, to mediating litigated cases involving elders or their families.  In this experiential workshop, we will explore:


  1. The universe of elder mediation

  2. Unique aspects of elder mediation

  3. The art of communicating with older people

  4. Adult development and the experience of aging

  5. Mediator qualities – role of understanding and compassion

  6. Ageism and stereotyping of elders

  7. Participation of the aging adult – capacity, representation and accommodation

  8. Case development – intake, assessment and design of elder disputes

  9. Skills to manage family dynamics and conversation

  10. Distinctions between mediation and therapy

  11. Resources for aging adults

  12. Ethical and legal issues unique to elder mediation

  13. Mediating litigated cases involving elder issues - elder abuse, trusts & estates, conservatorships

  14. The elder mediation practice


Leaders in the field will join Dana Curtis:


  1. Judy Barbar, MFT. Consultant and mediator in San Francisco who helps families work together to make sound succession, family philanthropy and estate planning decisions.  

  2. Daniel Bowling, Esq. Co-editor/co-author of Bringing Peace into the Room: How the Personal Qualities of the Mediator Impact the Process of Conflict Resolution; staff attorney mediator and trainer for the U.S. District Court, Northern District of California; meditation teacher and mediation trainer

  3. Vincent Marsella, Esq. Lawyer whose litigation practice is devoted to elder abuse litigation

  4. Deanna Randall, M.S.W. Family Care Specialist with the Alzheimer’s Association North Bay offices, with a focus on Marin, where she provides consultation to individuals and family members facing Alzheimer’s disease and other common forms of dementia and education to family caregivers and the community.

  5. Jeanne Tokarek, CMC. Professional Geriatric Care Manager,  with Eldercare Services in the Bay Area.  She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business and a Masters in Public Administration in Health Services from the University of San Francisco.  She has 18 years experience in the field of elder care, in particular working with older adults who have been conserved by the probate court.

  6. Marianne Gontarz York, LCSW. Gerontological social worker and photographer for forty years; currently Director of Resident Services at a large retirement facility; and widely-exhibited and published portrait photographer

Refunds:  Fees are fully refundable up to January 5, 2010, less a $50 administration fee. Fees are 50% refundable until February 5, 2010; thereafter, they are not refundable.


Enrollment:  Space is limited and acceptance is in order of receipt of completed registrations.


CE contact hours:  Provider Dana Curtis approved by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.  Provider # 4519, for 19.5 Contact Hours.


MCLE: This activity has been approved by the California State Bar for 19.5 MCLE credits.
