ABOUT REFLECTIVE PRACTICE GROUPS

Mediation, as most of us practice it, tends to be a solitary and sometimes isolating profession, in which we intensely focus on a dispute for a brief period, and then move on to the next case. Unless we carve out the opportunity to reflect and learn from our mediations, our experience goes unexplored or, if we do reflect, we may limit our inquiry to “What did I do wrong?”

The lack of appropriate reflection on our mediation experience is especially problematic in the developing specialty of Elder Mediation, where we are, more than ever, learning as we go.

In Reflective Practice Groups, we convene with our peers for a two-hour facilitated session once a month to reflect on our mediation practice. The content of each session is shaped by participants’ needs and their experiences in elder mediations and generally addresses professional development at three levels: skills, theory and personal qualities. Groups may discuss elder mediation issues in the abstract, but the primary focus of group discussions is on analyzing and reflecting on real mediations conducted by members of the group.

Less experienced mediators learn from more experienced mediators; and more experienced mediators re-examine old patterns and practices that may be more or less effective.

THE FACILITATOR

Dana Curtis believes professional development is best facilitated in small groups, where participants can be encouraged to explore their experience and learn from their peers.  She has conducted scores of mediation trainings nationally and internationally for the past twenty years and is one of the first trainers to provide specialized training in elder mediation. Her enthusiasm for reflective practice groups grows out of her experience with training coaches for role play exercises  and facilitating reflective practice groups in court-connected mediation programs.
